Congress is Home:
Let Us Make Supportive Housing a Priority

Connect with your members of Congress while they are in their home districts.

When members of Congress leave Washington, D.C. and return to their home districts, they are nearby and ready to hear from people like you. This is a great time to speak up about why supportive housing matters to you and your community.

1. Participate in a Town Hall

Town halls are public meetings where you can ask questions and share your thoughts. You can attend in person or online. Ask your member of Congress things like:

  • How are you helping to make sure that people with disabilities and complex healthcare needs have access to affordable housing?
  • What are you doing to support older adults in our community who do not have stable housing?
  • How are you making sure youth exiting foster care have the housing and support they need to succeed?
  • How are you helping people without stable housing get the health and mental health care they need to live more independently?

Check your member’s website or social media to find out when and where town halls are happening.

2. Invite them for a Visit

Ask your member to visit your organization, attend a groundbreaking, or meet with tenants. Seeing supportive housing in action helps them understand how it works and why it matters in your community.

3. Ask them to Meet with You

You can request a one-on-one meeting at their district office. This is a great opportunity to share your story and how supportive housing has helped you, your family, your community, or your organization. Personal stories have a big impact. Here’s a great example of CSH Speak Up! Advocate, Vikki Vickers sharing her story.

4. Educate them on Smart Housing Solutions

Supportive housing helps people with disabilities and complex health needs avoid costly stays in emergency rooms, jails, and psychiatric hospitals. These systems were not designed to provide long-term housing and healthcare, plus they come with high public costs. Share CSH’s Guide for Policymakers and Community Leaders for Reducing Street Homelessness to educate your members of Congress on more effective and fiscally responsible alternatives.

5. Call their Office or Send an Email

Call your members’ district offices or send them an email to ask them to support full funding for supportive housing in the FY26 budget. Use the CSH Action Center to get a pre-written email template that you can send or call them with a sample script.
